Sedgwick County's proposed moratorium on solar energy projects has sparked a debate, leaving many questioning the need for such a move. The county commission's decision to consider a second moratorium in three years has advocates for solar energy scratching their heads.
The Solar Moratorium Debate
The proposed six-month moratorium, with the potential for extension, has been met with skepticism by those who argue that solar technology hasn't undergone any significant changes since the last moratorium ended in September 2024. Lindsay Hamilton, program director for the Climate and Energy Project, believes the existing ordinance effectively balances property rights, community needs, and safety concerns.
"What would necessitate a moratorium is a radical shift in technology, which simply hasn't happened," Hamilton asserts. "The current policies are working well, and solar technology has proven its safety."
